Emergency Lighting

Unplanned power cuts can instantly plunge your property or premises into darkness, Emergency Lighting is essential to illuminate your safe exit route for your employees, guests or service users under these conditions. In the event of an emergency, you need lighting to illuminate automatically and stay on for a duration, guaranteeing safe evacuation. Effective design should also be a consideration to ensure lighting is both optimally placed and compliant with current Emergency Lighting regulations.

We provide an all-inclusive emergency lighting service for businesses, rental properties, larger HMO’s, schools and universities, retail premises and sports complexes. We provide testing and maintenance as well as the emergency lighting regulations information to all our customers because we want to give you peace of mind.

In the event that power supplies are down and you find you and your staff in an emergency situation, such as a fire, your emergency lighting should kick in to provide suitable illumination so that people can evacuate the premises safely.  As part of health and safety protocol, employers are required to carry out Periodic Inspection and Testing of their emergency lighting in accordance with the requirements of  BS 5266-1:2016 which our electricians can carry out for you and advise you if any improvements are required to make the installation safer.

Whats involved?

For most systems, an Emergency Light Test will include:

  • Testing all emergency lights for operation and illumination

  • Inspecting the condition of the system and checking the battery drain

  • Recording the test date

  • Reporting on system deficiencies, outlining actions and providing a quote

  • Training selected employees on how to conduct monthly inspections

  • Issuing an Emergency Light Certificate

Categories of Emergency Lighting

  • Emergency escape lighting – Provides illumination which lights the way for the safety of people evacuating a location.

  • Standby lighting – This is back-up lighting that is activated during a power cut to a level that allows work to continue. This has to be 100% of the normal lighting.

  • Escape route lighting – Clearly identifies means of safe and effective escape whilst location is occupied

Types of Emergency Lighting
  • Maintained: The luminaire works in exactly the same way as a standard mains version, except when the power fails, it then switches to battery powered emergency output.

  • Non-Maintained: The luminaire only comes on in the event of a power failure as an emergency light source. The continual mains supply is only used to charge the battery.

  • Self-Test Emergency: We can also offer the option of self-test luminaires, Self-Test protocols ensure you will always know the status of your emergency fitting.

  • Central Battery This is where the battery power for emergency lighting is situated at one, central point and fed to all  relevant luminaires in the event of a power failure, whether they are maintained or non-maintained.

  • Sustained: This is where a lamp separate to the main lamp provides the emergency light source. The purpose here is to minimise any possibility of emergency lamp failure, as the ‘sustained’ lamp is only used in  emergency mode. This will only be relevant on a maintained emergency luminaire.

  • All emergency luminaires will have a charge healthy LED indicator, which shows that the battery is being charged while there is a mains feed. When the power fails, the LED will switch off and the lamp will be illuminated by the battery.
